Wine Region: Burgundy - France

Grape:100% Gamay Noir.

Tasting notes: "A handsome, deep red color with purple tints and lovely aromas, with perfectly mature red and black fruit, hints of spice and floral notes of rose, peony and violet. Good body with fine tannins and good length. Rich, opulent and complex, finishing on a spicy note." Winemaker

A selection from the three top vineyards in the estate, this wine is rich and still young. Serious tannins give the wine structure. Partial oak aging adds richness and spice, improving the potential for aging. Drink from 2022." Roger Voss, The Wine Enthusiast"

Expert Rating:

94 / 100 Wine & Spirits

Downright delicious, with ample forestry-berry flavors and mouth-filling tannins. Sophisticated and elegant.

94 / 100 Vinous

A sumptuous, wonderfully expressive wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and spice all flesh out in a racy Beaujolais endowed with terrific richness. The 2018 can be enjoyed now, but it also has the richness to age gracefully in the cellar for years to come.

92/100 Decanter

'After a cold, wet winter the summer was very hot and dry. The first quarter was the most humid since 1964 but sunny conditions in June dried the plants with millerandage very evident. Berries were small and concentrated, malic acid was lower than average with the must being concentrated and powerful. Harvest 31 August, a yield of 34hl/ha. Deep hue with prune notes on the nose. There is plenty of purity and density here, easy, supple tannins with the oak hidden from view. Drinking well now' BY Andy Howard

About the winery: Located in the southernmost tip of the Burgundy region, Moulin-à-Vent was one of the first appellations awarded AOC status in 1936. Château du Moulin-à-Vent, named for the 300-year-old stone windmill atop the hill of Les Thorins, dates back to 1732, when it was called Château des Thorins. Today, the estate encompasses 37 hectares (91.4 acres) of the appellation’s finest climats — Les Vérillats, Le Champ de Cour, La Rochelle — planted to Gamay Noir averaging 40 years in age. The underlying granite soil is rich in iron oxide, copper and manganese, which may account for the wines’ aging potential. Since 2009, under the new ownership of the Parinet family, investment in the winemaking facilities and the vineyards has resulted in plot-specific signature wines expressing the individual characteristics of each exceptional terroir.
