Tasting notes

The 2019 Château Simard Saint-Émilion Grand Cru displays a medium to deep ruby-red colour with a subtle purple rim and opens with a complex nose of red fruits, delicate spices, savoury tones, earthy nuances, and a touch of cocoa. On the palate, it offers a warm, rich, and mid-weight profile, unfolding flavours of ripe plum, berry fruit, and light hints of coffee and cocoa. Fine, velvety tannins support its smooth, rounded texture, while the balanced structure leads to a harmonious, gently lingering finish. This vintage delivers both immediate pleasure and classic Right Bank charm.

More About The Winery

With a legacy dating back to the 17th century, Château Simard lies just outside the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, surrounded by some of the Right Bank’s most prestigious vineyards. The estate has been part of the Vauthier family holdings since 1954, and in 2008, Alain Vauthier of Château Ausone — one of only two estates classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A — inherited Simard following the passing of his uncle, Claude “Coco” Mazière.

The vineyard spans 40 hectares of gently sloping clay, sand, and gravel soils with a deep water table, encouraging vines to root deeply and produce wines of balance and complexity. Planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 35 years, the estate benefits from the expertise of vineyard manager Laurent Vallet and the guidance of general manager Pauline Vauthier.

True to Saint-Émilion tradition, Château Simard produces wines of elegance, harmony, and accessibility, while offering the structure and depth to age gracefully. Its proximity to Château Ausone and other first-growth vineyards underscores the quality of its terroir, making it one of the region’s hidden gems.
