WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING
“This classically-styled claret did not merit an outstanding rating because it lacks sufficient concentration to compete with the estate’s top vintages. However, it offers a dark ruby/plum color, nicely evolved notes of roasted herbs, sweet cherries and currants, and loamy earth, medium-weight, light to moderate tannin, and an elegant style. If it puts on weight over the next few years, it may deserve a slightly higher score.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
In 2012, the Gasqueton family sold Château Calon Ségur and Château Capbern to Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. Jean-Pierre Denis, its chairman, formed a partnership with Jean-François Moueix and his son Jean, the owners of the Videlot group. Together they have conducted renovation works worthy of Calon’s prestigious heritage. Calon Ségur is unique since its terroir resembles no other. While its altitude doesn’t go above 13 metres, its relief is sharp, and its slopes favour good rainwater drainage. In each area of the vineyard, the gravel layers deposited by the river during the quaternary era are thick and cover a largely clay sub-soil. The top-soil is made up of a thin layer of clay of lacustrine origin. This combination of gravels and clay, among other factors, explains the power and finesse of the wines of Calon Ségur.
