Wine Region: Loire - France
Grape:100% Chenin Blanc.
Tasting notes: A biodynamic and very attractive Savennieres wine boasting mature fruits and an ample, fresh and mineral body. A reference of the appellation.
Cuvee "Les Vieux Clos" comes under the Savennieres appellation. The vines, with an average age of 20 years, have been cultivated through Massal selection (not clonal) which makes for true aromatic complexity. The soil is made up of shale, quartz, and even sand in places. The wines are produced in either wood barrels or vats and have earthy, vegetal, and ripe fruit aromas. The palate is beautifully mineral and fresh with very ripe fruit flavours.
About the winery:Exclusively owned by the Joly family, La Coulée de Serrant vineyard is a controlled appellation of only 7 hectares.
Located in the Loire Valley of France, the vineyard has produced Chenin for close to a millennium, of a quality renowned enough to be praised in print by author Alexandre Dumas in the 1840s. In the early 1980s, Nicolas Joly decided to adopt biodynamic practices.
A decade and a half later Wine Spectator Magazine was ranking his white wine as among the best in the Loire Valley, and a decade later wine critic Jancis Robinson said his property was ' clearly destined to be one the world's great vineyards'. Maybe the best and most famous Chenin Blanc in the world.
