WHAT THE WINEMAKERS ARE SAYING

Les Grasses Têtes is mid-slope—ideally situated, deep clay soil and big chunks of rock bring power and coolness to the wine, it’s protected so it can fully ripen, its east facing brings tension, and classical stratification (a result of not being inside one of the combs) makes it more like other wines further south, like Gevrey-Chambertin Village wines on the south side. The resulting wine is deeper, more brooding, more classic in some four square sense with respect to its balance—with no real highs or lows.

OUR NOTES

Bruno Clair, originally of Domaine Clair-Daü, has an impressive and extensive estate in one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions. Twenty-three hectares of Premier Cru, Grand Cru, village wine, red, white and rose; the vineyards stretch far and wide throughout the Côte de Nuits.

Bruno Clair is the grandson of Joseph Clair (1889-1971), originator of the famous Domaine Clair-Daü founded in Marsannay in 1919. Following Joseph’s death, family disagreements led to the dismantling of the Domaine, and Bruno was entrusted with the vineyards of his parents, brothers and sisters which included those of Clos de Bèze, Cazetiers, Clos St-Jacques, Vosne-Romanée, Clos du Fonteny and Chambolle- Musigny. More vineyards were later purchased by the estate.

With regard to viticulture, Domaine Bruno Clair believes in the total absence of chemical fertilizers and the exclusive use of compost. The grapes are hand-harvested, and the selection of the best grapes is carried out primarily in the vineyards. The grapes are partially destemmed before being put into open wood vats. The wines are then put into oak barrels (20-50% new) and transferred to the cellar.
