WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“The 2016 Terrasses Du Larzac from winemaker Frederic Pourtalie is up there with the 2010, and my money is on it being one of the finest cuvées to date. Revealing a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeous notes of kirsch liqueur, wild fennel, garrigue, exotic spice, and pepper, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a terrific core of sweet fruit, and ripe, silky tannins. It’s a hedonistic, beautifully balanced wine from the Languedoc to enjoy any time over the coming 7-8 years or more.” Jeb Dunnuck

OUR NOTES

Domaine de Montcalmès is located 30 km north-west of Montpellier. It takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès located on the plateau of the same name which overlooks the Hérault valley. Originally, the family farm had 30 ha of vines fully vinified in a cooperative cellar. In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie decided to create a special cellar. The first wine making in red took place in 1999 and only 5000 bottles were produced. Today, Domaine de Montcalmès produces around 50,000 bottles a year. The property extends over 22 ha in the municipalities of Puéchabon, Aniane, St Jean de Fos and St Saturnin de Lucian (municipalities all part of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation).

TECHNICAL SHEET

Grape variety: 60% syrah, 20% mourvèdre, 20% grenache.

Average age of the vines: 30 years.

Yield: 25 hl / ha

Vineyard: the Syrah and Grenache vines are located on a limestone plateau (lake limestone) facing north. On Aniane, the land being oriented due south and northwest, we established the mourvèdre (rolled pebbles like Chateauneuf-du-Pape)

Aging: Aging in oak barrels of one wine, two wines or more for 24 months. Blending of the three grape varieties two months before bottling. Bottled in Old Moon, unfiltered wine.
