WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING
A great classic of the Larzac always at the highest level! A Summit of Mediterranean flavors, a great fineness of tannins, a final tight still but lavish in its aromas. Nose intoxicating and precise, with complex notes of muscqde, spicy, black fruit and ash. Anime in a minty freshness.
This great vintage was high during most of 2 years in old barrels of Romanée Conti, which explains in part its level. Its texture is luscious, crunchy sweetness with tannins fine and precise. A good concentration and a remarkable freshness make this wine a quite remarkable value.
Domaine de Montcalmes is located 30 km north-west of Montpellier. It takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès located on the plateau of the same name which overlooks the Hérault valley. Originally, the family farm had 30 ha of vines fully vinified in a cooperative cellar. In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie decided to create a special cellar. The first wine making in red took place in 1999 and only 5000 bottles were produced. Today, Domaine de Montcalmès produces around 50,000 bottles a year. The property extends over 22 ha in the municipalities of Puéchabon, Aniane, St Jean de Fos and St Saturnin de Lucian (municipalities all part of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation).
Grape variety: 60% syrah, 20% mourvèdre, 20% grenache.
Average age of the vines: 30 years.
Yield: 25 hl / ha
Vineyard: the Syrah and Grenache vines are located on a limestone plateau (lake limestone) facing north. On Aniane, the land being oriented due south and northwest, we established the mourvèdre (rolled pebbles like Chateauneuf-du-Pape)
Vinification: The different grape varieties are vinified separately. Harvest previously destemmed and crushed. Vinification on indigenous yeasts. Maceration of approximately 30 days following the vintage. Exclusive grafting on the three grape varieties.
Aging: Aging in oak barrels of one wine, two wines or more for 24 months. Blending of the three grape varieties two months before bottling. Bottled in Old Moon, unfiltered wine.
