Wine Region: Burgundy - France
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
Tasting notes: "A more elegant nose combines lovely spice and an abundance of floral elements with those of ripe fruit that derives more from the red side of the spectrum. The elegance continues on the beautifully textured, refined and lacy middle weight flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the youthfully austere, balanced and sneaky long finish. This classically styled Volnay is presently not particularly complex, but the potential appears to be present for more to develop." Burghound.com

The Story: Contrary to what one might think, the term "Brouillard" isn't linked to meteorology but rather to the old French word "breuil" or beuillât", or a small area where young or short trees grow.
The Premier Cru "Les Brouillards" is quite heterogeneous. The Domaine's tiny vineyard of 0.37 hectare is found in the top – and best – portion that runs alongside "Les Mitans", on a rocky and marl-dense soil with fine clay.
The Les Brouillards premier cru comes from the best plot in the climat (0.37 hectares), located on the upper slopes of the hillside, on pebbly, marly ground with fine clays. This wine is well structured, elegant and generous. It generally opens up while quite young, after 5-7 years.

About the Winery: After being founded in the 1750s, in the mid-18th century, the Domaine de Montille century extended over 12 hectares. The family's financial problems meant that Etienne de Montille, the manager at that time, had to abandon certain parcels of land and focus on 3 hectares, mainly in Volnay. With the arrival of Hubert de Montille, Etienne's grandson, the domaine took off in another direction. Like his father, Hubert was a lawyer, however he would go on to lead a double life as a wine grower and a lawyer. He decided to produce his own wines from A to Z. Within a few decades, he would become one of the finest examples in the region, perfectly expressing the terroir of each climat with pure and elegant wines.
Today, the domaine is managed by Etienne de Montille, Hubert's son who also was originally steered towards a legal career. The domaine now has 20 hectares of vines, including 15 of grand and premier crus, on the best climats of Burgundy, in white and red! Domaine de Montille now produces its wines using biodynamic methodology, perpetuating the tradition of innovation and excellence introduced by Hubert de Montille.
