Domaine de Montille - Volnay 1er Cru " Les Taillepieds" - red - 2017 - 1500 ml
WHAT THE WINEMAKERS ARE SAYING
"The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds is also showing very well, bursting with expressive aromas of peonies, orange rind and wild berries, as well as hints of raw cocoa and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with an ample core of succulent fruit underpinned by melting tannins and lively acids. While it's already deceptively charming, this also has the necessary depth for sustained and positive development in the cellar. From 80-year-old vines, this is one of de Montille's emblematic wines—and with good reason."
William Kelley, Wine Advocate
Domaine de Montille sits on 17 hectares, mainly in Côte de Beaune, although some fine wines from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée have been integrated.
The Domaine was created in the 1750s. It sat on a veritable treasure, in total, 12 hectares of magnificent terroir, planted with Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. When Hubert de Montille took over in the 1950s, the family Domaine had been reduced to its smallest size of barely 3 hectares. In 1983, Étienne started working at the Domaine. He asserted his style and philosophy: biodynamic farming, whole cluster fermentation to add aromatics and silkier wines with less austerity. All the while, he remained true to his vision: authenticity, purity, elegance and balance. In 2011, the Domaine counted 20 hectares of vines, of which 75% were Premiers or Grands Crus from both Côtes.
The idea of minimal intervention speaks very clearly to the team when it comes to their terroir. There was total abandonment of chemical fertilizers and herbicides in 1985, and then fungicides and synthetic insecticides in 1995 before switching to organic, biodynamic in 2005. Finally, the domain became Ecocert Bio certified in 2012.
