WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING
“Generous and expressive, the 2018 Santenay Vieilles Vignes evokes notions of ripe cherries, strawberries and plums. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's one of the supplest, most charming reds in the Muzard range this year and it will drink well young.” William Kelley, Wine Advocate
In the region of Santenay, the Muzard name is highly recognized for the quality of the wines made by the estate. Their wines always show bright, attractive fruit in youth, and they have the structure needed for serious aging as well. The Muzard brothers share a vision for producing wholesome wines; and they also understand the work required to make those wines.
The family can trace their local roots as far back as 1645 – nine generations. Lucien Muzard was the father of Claude and Herve who are the Domaine’s current owners. It took him 5 years to pull off, clear and replant his 5 hectares of vines. Currently, the 16 hectares of the estate are planted with 10 ha in first growths, 5 in “villages” and 1 in regional appellation.
All the soils are worked, under the row only, and crop-covering is used between the rows on the steep hillsides, and on all the surface planted on south-facing hills. Herbicides have been abandoned for more than 10 years and the first treatments labeled “AB” (organic agriculture) date back to 2008, which was a difficult year.
