WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING
Vintages: 2012 (60%), 2011 (20%) & 2010 (20%) - One of the greatest rosé wines of Champagne and a wine of haunting finesse. The blend, bottled in 2012, is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay with 60% coming from 2011 and 40% vins de réserve (split equally between 2010 and 2009). Then there is the 5% Coteaux Champenois Rouge (arguably the finest red wine of the AOC) from the powerful 2009 harvest that gives the wine its colour and a great deal of character to boot. Dosage is a negligible 2g/l. We do not know of another rosé Champagne that can match Egly's version for purity and finesse. The fruit is from 100% Grand Cru vines, grown by one of the most meticulous vignerons of the region. Unbelievably fine, perfumed and 'Pinot' fruited, this is something truly special. "Egly-Ouriet's NV Brut Rosé is terrific. Bright cranberry, raspberry, white flowers, citrus and chalky notes are some of the signatures. Fine, elegant and chiseled, the Brut Rosé possesses terrific balance and class. Bright, saline notes extend the finish. This is another super-impressive 2011-based Champagne from Egly-Ouriet.
It was right after the second World War that the Egly House was born, when Francis Egly’s Grandfather started in the wine business. Today, the vineyard covers about 17 hectares, eight of which are located in Ambonnay and the rest in Bouzy, Verzenay and Vrigny. Two thirds are planted of Pinot noir and the rest is shared between Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The soil is clay-limestone and benefits from a south-east exposure. All the work is reasoned farming. Depending on the harvest’s and the wine’s characteristics, Francis Egly, the current owner, varies the barrels in which the wine is going to age. He believes in the importance of letting every terroir express itself, instead of following a steady recipe.
Of the 150,000 bottles produced every year, only 100,000 are sold, and the rest are kept as reserve—today Egly-Ouriet has no less than 700,000 bottles in reserve.
