Wine Region: Loire - France
Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc.
Tasting notes:A wonderfully complex, dry white wine commonly regarded as the 'nec plus ultra' of the appellation. Warming vanilla aromas and flavours of nuts and honey slowly unfurl on the palate and develop with ageing. A sophisticated, contemplative wine that merits wider recognition. Certified organic.
Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is not a wine for instant gratification. Aficionados aver that it is a wine best approached with at least 4 years bottle-age and that it should be decanted well in advance; some say a whole day in advance. With a complex bouquet of conference pears, quince and fennel and a multi-faceted palate of orchard fruit, herbs and minerals it is a wine that every oenophile should sample - if only to form their personal opinion.
About the winery: Exclusively owned by the Joly family, La Coulée de Serrant vineyard is a controlled appellation of only 7 hectares.
Located in the Loire Valley of France, the vineyard has produced Chenin for close to a millennium, of a quality renowned enough to be praised in print by author Alexandre Dumas in the 1840s. In the early 1980s, Nicolas Joly decided to adopt biodynamic practices.
A decade and a half later Wine Spectator Magazine was ranking his white wine as among the best in the Loire Valley, and a decade later wine critic Jancis Robinson said his property was ' clearly destined to be one the world's great vineyards'. Maybe the best and most famous Chenin Blanc in the world.
