Tasting notes:

In the glass, Château Léoville Las Cases 1975 offers a deep ruby purple colour with light grey highlights.

The nose opens with a mineral bouquet of damp stones interspersed with ripe berry fruits such as blackcurrant (red and black) and a earthy note.

On the palate, Château Léoville Las Cases reveals a palate still very powerful and strongly tannic. Full-bodied and very concentrated, Chateau Léoville Las Cases shows no sign of aging. It offers a velvety and deep mouth of an incredible aromatic richness with black and red fruits in abundance reinforced by very powerful tannins and still shrunken.

Expert Rating:

James Suckling 94 / 100

Château Léoville Las Cases St. Julien 1975: This came as a big surprise because I usually associate outstanding bottles of Bordeaux from this vintage with only the Right Bank or Graves. But the 1975 Las Cases are superb. It showed gorgeous aromas of dried berry and tobacco with iodine and shells. It was full body, firm with pleasantly chewy tannins and a chalk, berry and lavender aftertaste. Fresh finish. It's still so beautiful.”

Robert Parker’s 92 / 100

“This is one of the great successes of the vintage. However, those with modern day tastes for soft, easy-going, supple wines may not enjoy the 1975 Leoville Las-Cases. Why? It is a tannic, backward, old style wine cut from the mold of such vintages as 1948 and 1928. The color is a dark ruby/garnet with a hint of amber at the edge. The nose offers up distinctive mineral, lead pencil, sweet, blackcurrant scents with flinty overtones. Full-bodied, thick, and concentrated, as well as atypically muscular and powerful, this should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage. There are sensational levels of richness and intensity. While the vintage's tough tannin level ensures another 20-35 years of longevity, the wine may dry out by that time. I thought this wine would be at its peak by the mid-nineties, but it still needs another 5-8 years of cellaring. It is a very impressive, albeit backward and hard wine.”

About the winery:

Property of Jean-Hubert Delon, Château Leoville Las Cases is a Saint Julien Second Grand Cru Classe (Classification of 1855), located in the Bordeaux region, on the left bank of the Gironde. The 8,600-vine stocks/Ha vineyard covers 98 hectares of vines that grow on clay-gravel and sandy-gravel soils. The vines of Leoville Las Cases estate are 40 years old and are grown according to sustainable winegrowing principles.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases produces several red wine cuvees including a great wine, "Le Grand Vin de Leoville", and a second wine called "Le Petit Lion". It also produces a wine that was created in 1902 called "Clos du Marquis". This wine is made from vines that are located outside of the original land register of Domaine de Leoville. A second wine called "Petite Marquise du Clos du Marquis" is made from the estate's youngest vines. All the cuvees produced by Chateau Leoville Las Cases are blended wines and come from three grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc), in different proportions depending on the vintage and the cuvee. Cabernet Sauvignon is indeed the most used grape variety to produce the "Grand Vin de Leoville" unlike Leoville's second wine which is mostly made from Merlot.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases produces exceptional quality wines that can be considered as the most consistent Saint Julien wines since 1975. Their quality level is close to the 1st wines classed in the Pauillac designation. In its best years (2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1986,1985, 1982), Leoville Las Cases was praised by international critics and got the best marks for their wines. Honourable mention to the exceptional 1986 wine, for which Robert Parker awarded the best "tasting note" score of 100/100. Leoville Las Cases is a great coloured wine, powerful, concentrated and full of amplitude. It's got an amazing ageing potential and gain great finesse over time.
