Domaine de Montille - Pommard red 1er Cru 'Les Pezerolles' 2018

Tasting notes:It can be difficult to identify this Pommard in blind tastings because it is atypical. Its floral, perfumed and yet subtle aromas mix with small red and black fruits which are framed by a rather light, svelte and feminine structure accompanied by a simultaneously generous yet tense texture.

Expert Rating:

The 2018 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru has a more detailed purer bouquet compared to Les Grands Epenots offering vivacious dark cherry raspberry and pomegranate notes and good mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and finer tannins and the calcaire soils plus the 30% whole cluster lend real definition and personality on the finish. Excellent. (Drink between 2022-2042)

Here too there is just enough oak influence to merit mentioning framing the elegant essence of poached plum violet and soft spice wisps. The wood can also be found on the notably more refined and even better-defined middle weight flavors that exhibit excellent punc

The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Pezerolles was showing especially well bursting from the glass with scents of orange rind peonies wild berries and cinnamon that's quite marked by its whole-cluster component. Medium to full-bodied succulent and supple it's ripe and enveloping with supple powdery tannins cloaked in a fleshy core of fruit.

About the Winery: After being founded in the 1750s, in the mid-18th century, the Domaine de Montille century extended over 12 hectares. The family's financial problems meant that Etienne de Montille, the manager at that time, had to abandon certain parcels of land and focus on 3 hectares, mainly in Volnay. With the arrival of Hubert de Montille, Etienne's grandson, the domaine took off in another direction. Like his father, Hubert was a lawyer, however he would go on to lead a double life as a wine grower and a lawyer. He decided to produce his own wines from A to Z. Within a few decades, he would become one of the finest examples in the region, perfectly expressing the terroir of each climat with pure and elegant wines.

Today, the domaine is managed by Etienne and Alix de Montille, Hubert's children who also were originally steered towards a legal career. The domaine now has 20 hectares of vines, including 15 of grand and premier crus, on the best climats of Burgundy, in white and red! Domaine de Montille now produces its wines using biodynamic methodology, perpetuating the tradition of innovation and excellence introduced by Hubert de Montille. Etienne and Alix also created a mini trading structure, Maison Deux Montille Soeur Frère.
