Wine from Sancerre

Granted AOC status in 1936 for its whites and 1959 for its reds, Sancerre covers close to 3,000 hectares on the eastern edge of the Loire Valley, where only two grape varieties are permitted: Sauvignon Blanc, grown on flint, limestone, and clay-limestone soils that give the wine its citrus, gooseberry, and flinty minerality, and Pinot Noir for the appellation's lesser-known reds and rosés.
