Château Margaux

Château Margaux stands among only five First Growths named in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, and of that storied handful, it is the one most often described as the most elegant, the most perfumed, the very essence of grace in a glass. The estate unfolds across 262 hectares on a plateau of deep, well-drained gravel in the heart of the Margaux appellation, in the Haut-Médoc, a terroir that has given the wines their signature finesse, aromatic depth, and remarkable capacity to age.

Two red wines carry the estate's name into the world. The Grand Vin, Château Margaux itself, is built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, roughly 88% of the blend, rounded out by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Its second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, shares that same character in a more approachable register. And in a rarity for the region, the estate also produces a white: Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, crafted entirely from Sauvignon Blanc, now counted among the most coveted white wines Bordeaux has to offer.

The modern chapter of Château Margaux began in 1977, when the Mentzelopoulos family acquired the estate and set in motion a renaissance that would define its trajectory for decades to come, first under the meticulous hand of Paul Pontallier, and today under Philippe Bascaules. The vintages that followed are widely regarded as among the finest the appellation has ever produced.

That legacy is written most vividly in the recent vintages: 2015, a modern masterpiece; 2010, prized for its extraordinary structure; 2009, opulent and generous; 2005, the very definition of classic Margaux, each earning perfect 100-point scores, alongside 2000, exceptional for its ageing potential at 99 points. Further back, 1985, 1986, and 1996 remain the stuff of legend.
