Calvados

The Domain

Calvados is more than just a spirit — it is an icon of Lower Normandy’s culture and heritage. Crafted for centuries, this amber-hued eau-de-vie is distilled from dry cider made with specially grown Normandy apples. Known for its smooth layers of fruit and oak, Calvados gained international recognition during World War II, when US and Canadian regiments discovered it after landing on the D-Day beaches. Their fondness helped carry the fame of this golden nectar across the Atlantic.

The aftermath of the war brought destruction to many Calvados distilleries, yet resilience led to their reconstruction and modernization. As demand steadily grew, major houses such as Boulard and Père Magloire built worldwide reputations, while passionate smaller producers remained committed to preserving traditional methods. Today, Calvados continues to evolve — balancing history, authenticity, and innovation — with distilleries like Château du Breuil standing as proud guardians of Normandy’s spirit-making legacy.

Today, Château du Breuil is proudly led by Roberto Montesano, who continues to guide the estate with passion and innovation. Under his leadership, the château remains true to its Norman roots while embracing new horizons — from the production of world-class Calvados – Pays d’Auge to ambitious projects such as Rum and Norman Single Malt Whisky. Montesano’s vision blends respect for tradition with modern creativity, ensuring that Château du Breuil continues to shine as one of France’s most admired distilleries, with its spirits enjoyed in more than 50 countries worldwide.

The Style

At Château du Breuil, every cask has its place. Under the watchful eye of the cellar master, each barrel is carefully positioned to allow the perfect balance of wood, air, and spirit to interact during maturation. This delicate alchemy is what shapes the complexity and finesse of the house’s Calvados.

The “younger” Fine Calvados are aged for at least two years in oak barrels before bottling, offering a vibrant and fruit-forward profile. Like fine wine, time brings elegance: the longer Calvados rests in cask, the smoother and more harmonious it becomes. At Château du Breuil, this maturation can last up to 25 years, producing spirits of remarkable depth and refinement.

The château produces more than a dozen distinctive Calvados, from youthful expressions to an impressive range of “Hors d’Âge” bottlings — aged six to twenty-five years — as well as bold and creative blends. Among them is the prestigious “Le Royal,” a secret composition crafted by the cellar master, showcasing the estate’s savoir-faire and innovative spirit.
