Montagny is unique among the villages of Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise in producing white wine exclusively — Chardonnay grown on limestone-rich soils that give the wines a fresh, mineral character closer in spirit to Chablis than to the richer whites of the Côte de Beaune. Unusually, any Montagny reaching a minimum natural alcohol level is entitled to Premier Cru status, a quirk of the appellation's rules that has led to debate over consistency across producers.

At its best, Montagny offers crisp, food-friendly white Burgundy at genuinely accessible prices — an easy, everyday alternative to the Côte de Beaune's more expensive Chardonnay appellations.
