Domäne Roland Chan

Wachau

The Domain

Domäne Roland Chan is a boutique estate in Wösendorf, a small village in the heart of Austria's Wachau, the steep, narrow stretch of the Danube valley between Melk and Krems that is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

The estate was founded in 2017 by Roland Müksch and his wife, Dr Sharon Chan. Their link to the village goes back further: the family bought a second home in Wösendorf in 2013, and Roland spent several years looking for vineyards before making the leap. The name brings their two stories together, and the labels carry the Chinese character for "Chan", a rare sight in one of Europe's most traditional wine regions.

In 2019 the estate joined Vinea Wachau, the association of the region's quality-focused growers, and gained its sustainability certification in the same year.

The Style

The estate farms just over two hectares of dry-stone terraces across four sites: Achleiten, Höll, Bach and Klaus. On slopes this steep, everything is done by hand, and yields are tiny.

Each site gives the wines its own voice. Achleiten, one of the Wachau's most celebrated crus, brings tension and mineral depth. Höll, whose name means "hell", is a hot, south-facing terrace that yields riper, more generous wines. Bach, a parcel within the Wösendorfer Gaisberg, includes old vines that add concentration and texture.

The focus is on dry white wines, mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, made in the Wachau's Federspiel and Smaragd categories, along with Weissburgunder and a small amount of Zweigelt.

In the glass, the Grüner Veltliners show orchard fruit, white pepper and a creamy texture held in place by fresh acidity. The Rieslings bring apricot, peach and citrus blossom over a firm mineral core.

The result is a collection of precise, dry and age-worthy wines, each a faithful expression of its terrace.
