Bordeaux Wines

Founded as an appellation in 1936 and covering roughly 100,000 hectares either side of the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux is the world's largest fine wine region by production and the home of the 1855 Classification, still the most famous quality ranking in wine. On the Left Bank, gravel soils and Cabernet Sauvignon produce the structured wines of Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe; on the Right Bank, clay and limestone favour Merlot in Saint-Émilion, classified since 1955, and Pomerol.
