Corton-Charlemagne
Corton-Charlemagne is the great white wine Grand Cru of the Corton hill, taking its name from Emperor Charlemagne, who reputedly owned vineyards here in the 8th century. Planted on chalky, limestone-rich soils near the top of the slope, it produces Chardonnay of extraordinary power and precision — rich and full-bodied like the best of Meursault, yet with the mineral tension and ageing potential more associated with Chablis or Montrachet.
Corton-Charlemagne sits alongside Le Montrachet as one of the two towering benchmarks of white Burgundy, offering broad-shouldered, honeyed complexity in youth that develops extraordinary depth with a decade or more in the cellar.
