Domaine Lucien Muzard

Santenay

The Domain

Domaine Lucien Muzard, as it stands today, was established in the 1960s by Lucien Muzard, a man known for his keen eye and profound kindness. He instilled in his sons the values of hard work and loyalty, principles that continue to shape the estate. His eldest son, Claude, joined the domaine in 1987, followed by Hervé three years later. While both learned the fundamentals of winemaking from their father, they further refined their skills at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune. Their practical training took place close to home—one at Clos Bellefond, the other at Domaine Prieur—a testament to their enduring commitment to Santenay and its terroir. Under their leadership, the domaine transitioned away from bulk wine sales, now bottling the entire 18-hectare estate, producing 80% red and 20% white wines. They introduced new foudres in the cellar and incorporated whole-cluster fermentation in their reds—up to 100% in a special cuvée honoring their father. In 2019, Capucine, Claude’s daughter, joined the domaine, continuing the family legacy. While the range has expanded with new cuvées through négociant activity and vineyard acquisitions, Santenay remains the heart of the estate's identity.

The Vineyard

From the very beginning in 1993, the estate was driven by a commitment to producing high-quality wines. Starting from scratch, the initial focus was on replacing high-yielding vines with lower-yielding varieties that prioritized quality over quantity. Emphasizing soil health and balance, the team adopted sustainable practices to ensure the long-term vitality of the vineyards. These organic farming methods remain a cornerstone of their daily work. To further promote biodiversity, trees and hedgerows have been replanted around the vines, creating a more harmonious and resilient ecosystem.

The Style

Staying true to the teachings of those who mentored them, the estate has preserved a balance between traditional vinification and modern techniques. While whole-bunch fermentation was once the standard, vinification is now carefully adapted to each cuvée, taking into account vine age and the characteristics of each vintage. However, one exception remains—the special cuvée honoring their father, crafted exclusively from 100% whole grapes sourced from the Beauregard Premier Cru parcel in Santenay. This wine stands as a symbol of their heritage, representing the foundation of their identity and winemaking philosophy.
