Red Bordeaux is the wine that built Bordeaux's global reputation — blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec, shaped by which side of the Gironde estuary the grapes are grown. Left Bank appellations like Pauillac, Margaux, and Saint-Julien lean on gravelly soils and Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and power, while Right Bank appellations like Saint-Émilion and Pomerol favour Merlot on clay and limestone for richness and immediate approachability.
