Tasting notes

The 2016 Château Phélan Ségur is a structured, harmonious Saint-Estèphe red blend (55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot), with a deep ruby color, rich aromas of blackberry and cherry, a smooth mid-palate with dense, fine-grained tannins, and a long, powerful, pencil-shaving finish.

From Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France, blending 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, aged in roughly 60% new oak barrels for 18 months. Rated 95 points by James Suckling and 94 points by Decanter.

Deep dark red with bright purple highlights. The aroma is a complex bouquet of black cherry, ripe blackberry, and wild strawberry, accented by subtle star anise, licorice, and sweet toast. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with sappy dark fruit, earthy undertones, and classic graphite grip.

More About The Winery

The history of Château Phélan Ségur is linked to a young Irishman, Bernard Phelan, a wine broker, who left his native land at the end of the 18th century to settle in Bordeaux. In 1805, he acquired the Clos de Garamey located in Saint Estèphe and completed his first acquisition with the purchase of the Ségur de Cabanac estate in 1810.

The Château changed owners several times afterwards, becoming the property of Xavier Gardinier in 1985, who undertook restoration work to give the property the lustre of its past. After more than thirty years at the head of the property, the Gardinier family passed the reins of the estate to Philippe Van de Vyvere, a great wine lover fulfilling one of his dearest dreams by taking over this prestigious vineyard.

Today the estate continues to be recognised as one of Saint-Estèphe's most consistent performers, prized for wines that combine density and structure with a distinctly polished, modern style.
