Tasting notes

The 2017 Roc de Cambes Côtes de Bourg is a deep garnet-purple wine with rich aromas of ripe black cherries, blackberry, licorice, and subtle spice. The full-bodied palate balances opulent dark fruit, fresh acidity, and satiny tannins, closing on a long, savory finish.

Deep garnet-purple with ruby highlights. The nose shows macerated dark cherries, blackberry, cassis, and plum mixed with licorice, spice, and earthy tobacco notes.

Medium to full-bodied, dense, and rich, with a velvety, satiny texture and refined, grainy tannins. Layers of ripe dark fruit, star anise, and mint sit alongside a racy line of fresh acidity, leading to a long, persistent finish with gentle pepper and savory undertones.

More About The Winery

Located in the Côtes-de-Bourg appellation, at the foot of the citadel of Bourg, the Château du Roc de Cambes is one of the two estates of François Mitjaville. Comprising, from the Gironde, three successive slopes facing south, this estate that has crossed the centuries consists of an amphitheater of hillsides and a magnificent 14th century cellar.

Located on a beautiful clay-limestone soil with a southern exposure, the vines of Roc de Cambes are the object of every attention to produce an exceptional and unique wine in the appellation. The control of yields (10 to 40hl/ha depending on the vintage) is essential, and the quality of the raw material is decisive.

François Mitjaville is one of Bordeaux's most singular winemakers, better known to many for his cult Saint-Émilion estate, Tertre Rôteboeuf. At Roc de Cambes he applies the same uncompromising philosophy: late picking for full physiological ripeness, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a refusal to chase fashion. The result is a wine that has repeatedly outperformed far more expensive Bordeaux in blind tastings, cementing Mitjaville's reputation as one of the region's most respected and idiosyncratic voices.
