Wine Region: Rhone - France
Grape: 100% Viognier. Organic farming.
Tasting notes: Impressive! Ranked a Vin de Pays of the Rhodaniennes Hills, this single varietal has evolved on the high slopes of Condrieu, at more than 300 metres above sea level, which explains why it is impossible to classify it as a Condrieu PDO. But the resemblance is uncanny! Distinguishing them is a challenge! It stands out first due to its beautiful pale gold colour that then opens up to a stone fruit nose of peach and apricot. The palate reveals the delicious and fruity side, it is well rounded and mature! A great result!!
This organic wine is a classic Viognier from a celebrated producer - a bouquet of honeysuckle and violets, a sensuous mid-weight palate of apricots and mirabelles preceding an elegant, dry finish.
How to Enjoy: It makes an alluring aperitif and requires little accompaniment save perhaps a few olives. Or paired with fish dishes. It is intended for relatively forward drinking over the next 2 to 3 years.
About the winery: Georges Vernay is known as the "King of Condrieu" and was responsible for the growth and worldwide recognition of this small appellation during the 1950s. His estate covers 16 hectares of vineyards, 3 of which are in the Côte Rôtie appellation. The steep and uneven vineyards make mechanical labour impossible. The vines are manually propagated without the use of residual herbicide or insecticide.
Georges' daughter, Christine, returned to her roots with Paul Anselem, her Parisian husband, and has looked after the winemaking since 1997, gaining worldwide recognition for her Côte Rôtie wines.
