Wine Region: Provence - France
Grape: 70 % Mourvèdre, 30 % Grenache
Tasting notes: 'It’s a super-bright and juicy Mediterranean red with lively, wild berry compote fruit, loads of fresh sage and tarragon notes and some meaty, charcuterie characters. It’s deep yet fresh and vibrant with a driven, iodine-rich finish. A superb Mediterranean red from a producer that is a joy to represent.'
The altitude, the influence of the sea and the limestone/clay soils all bring a freshness and purity that is rare in Mediterranean reds.
This cuvée is based only on the fruit of the oldest vines and finest parcels of Château de Pibarnon. Pibarnon’s rouge has always been a wine of finesse, and in recent years the style has been evolving further, becoming ever more refined. Under the young chef de culture Éric Schladenhaufen, the organic and biodynamic vineyard management has progressed, while in the cellar, cellarmaster Marie Laroze avoids winemaking artefact, working only with wild yeasts, large-format oak, low sulphur and micro-batching based on terroir.
About the winery: The breathtaking beauty of the Pibarnon vineyard and the originality of its exceptional terroir are gathered in the majesty of its wines.
The origin of the refinement and elegance of Pibarnon wines lies in its captivating site overlooking the Mediterranean, where the vines, planted on restanques (traditional Provençal dry-stone retaining walls) up to 300 meters above sea level, live in perfect symbiosis with a carefully preserved ecosystem and an exceptional local soil. Those factors on their own would justify the estate's classification as a "clos” or a "climate”, like the great wines of Burgundy.
