The Bentrock Vineyard, located at the western end of Santa Rosa Road in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, is recognized for its rugged, coastal-influenced terroir. Racines sources fruit from two distinct north-facing parcels:
High-elevation parcel: Exposed and windswept, with rocky Santa Lucia shaly clay loam soils, producing tension and minerality in the wine.
Lower parcel: Slightly more protected, with deeper Tierra sandy loam soils, adding richness and depth.
The vineyard’s cool climate and persistent ocean breezes ensure slow ripening, preserving natural acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity.
The 2019 Bentrock Chardonnay was vinified using classic Burgundian techniques to highlight purity, minerality, and structure:
Fermentation:
Native yeast fermentation in 500L puncheons, 350L barrels, and 228L barriques,25% new French oak, ensuring subtle texture and integration.
Aging:11 months in barrel (French oak, 25% new), 7 additional months in stainless steel tank on lees for refinement and complexity. Total Elevage: 18 months.
Racines is a visionary collaboration between three renowned French winemakers: Étienne de Montille & Brian Sieve (Burgundy) & Rodolphe Péters (Champagne Pierre Péters).
This project is their first venture outside of France, blending Burgundian finesse, Champagne purity, and the coastal vibrancy of California. Their wines are crafted with minimal intervention, focusing on terroir expression, extended elevage, and fresh acidity, making them among the most age-worthy in the region.
