PHILOSOPHY - The mystery of the climats: The Les Cherbaudes Premier Cru magnificently illustrates the magic of Burgundy’s climats. This little known wine that is available in limited quantities owes its balance to the depth of its soils, which is rather unique in this area. Tradition has it that in medieval times this was the site of a cemetery. But rest assured, there is no trace of it remaining today…

TERROIR - Niched in a small depression, beneath the Mazis-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru climats, on a very gentle east-facing slope, Les Cherbaudes features deep red soils with few stones that retain a certain amount of moisture, thus ensuring even ripening of the grapes. Year after year this plot produces magnificently well-balanced elegant wines that boast remarkable depth.

VINIFICATION AND AGEING - The grapes were handpicked and meticulously sorted so as to keep only the highest quality fruit. The bunches of grapes were destemmed and transferred to tanks, where vinification began under the influence of indigenous yeasts and lasted 20 days, punctuated by daily punch-downs to enhance the wine’s colour and tannins. Barrel ageing lasted 18 months: the first 6 months in a one-year-old barrel followed by 12 months in two other barrels – one new and one that had been used twice before. The selected barrels were crafted from oak sourced from Burgundy’s Cîteaux forest.

TASTING NOTES - Gorgeous dark red in colour. Beautiful, open, expressive nose redolent of fruit aromas (black cherry, red berry jelly, raspberry liqueur), floral (violet) and spicy (cinnamon, cumin, thyme) scents along with woody notes (light tobacco, cedar, peat). There are also more mineral notes of wet limestone pebbles and flint. Starts off round on the palate with an impression of sucrosity. Remarkable precision with flavours of blue fruit, cherry and chocolate. This is a very elegant wine that finishes on a note of pleasing acidity complemented by fine tannins.

PRESSAND AWARDS - Jasper Morris: 91-93/100

About the winery: The Delaunay story is absolutely unique!

25 years earlier, the Delaunay family sold the family premium wine estate. A couple of years ago, Laurent Delaunay,  the 5th  generation of a family of winemakers and négociants, is re-appropriating his family’s history!

After a few years of intense work at the cellar by Laurent, we can tell : Delaunay is back on the very front of the scene with nicest appellations, superb juices.

The Revival of the House
The revival of the House of Edouard Delaunay began three years ago when Laurent, great grandson of the founder, bought back the winery, brand and cellar and added them to Chateau de Charmont, in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits, purchased in 2007.
His ambition has been to return it to its former glory and make Edouard Delaunay a leading Burgundian wine house once more. He has done that, and then some!

Purity and precision are the two keywords for us. My philosophy is really: listening, reading the terroir and the vines’ condition, trying to understand, and gently accompanying the natural evolution of the wine.

The 3 IWC trophy of best wine maker won by Christophe Briotet, the wine maker of Maison Edouard Delaunay. He is the only one in the world to have one such trophy for 3 consecutive years.
