Spotlight On: La Coulée de Serrant - Biodynamic Icon of the Loire

October 10, 2025

Planted by Cistercian monks in 1130, the 7-hectare La Coulée de Serrant monopole in Savennières is one of France’s most storied vineyards. Today, the Joly family farms it biodynamically, crafting profound, age-worthy Chenin Blanc that marries schist-driven minerality with tension, depth, and extraordinary longevity. For readers looking to buy Loire wines in Singapore or explore benchmark biodynamic wines, this is as authentic as it gets.

The History of La Coulée de Serrant

The Coulée of Serrant was planted at the 12th century (1130) by Cisterciens Monks and always remained in vine since. The AOC spans 7 hectares and is a monopoly of the Joly family. The wine of La Coulée de Serrant has long been regarded a beverage of choice: Louis XI nicknamed it “la goutte d’or” (meaning “drop of gold”) while Louis XIV even payed the domain a visit. Its reputation as one of the finest whites in France lives on to this day.The Chenin vines are aged between 40 and 80 years and enjoy a sheltered south west facing position overlooking the Loire. It is here that the stream La Coulée de Serrant flows into the Loire, providing a unique microclimate.Restored in the 1960s by Madame Joly, the domain has since been taken over by her son Nicolas. Nicolas is now one of the most emblematic wine producers and is considered one of the pioneers in biodynamic viticulture since the 1980s.

It is with it only an “appellation controlee” of 7 hectares only. Located on very stiff slopes, dominating the Loire, the vines resulting from the type of vine “chenin” have more than 35 to 40 years of average age; oldest having more 80 years give wood to make new vines carrying the originality of the place. Partly cultivated with the horse, or the hand, the average output is with 20/25 hectolitres per hectare (40 authorized). The ground far from thick, (20 with 40 cm on average) is on a red schist bottom obliques which drains the vines perfectly. The grape harvest is done in 5 times out of 3 to 4 weeks to obtain the most coloured possible maturity and the most marked by the botrytis.
