Tasting notes

" The 2016 Pinot Noir Bollenberg Neuberg is one of the two wines made from Zusslin's discontinued iconic Bollenberg Harmonie.

The Neuberg comes from an upper plot in the east-facing part of the Bollenberg with its Pinot roots in a reddish Jurassic limestone soil with a very thin (20–40 centimeters) layer of silt. The Neuberg is darker in color than its twin from the Luft parcel and opens with a very intense and warm bouquet of dark fruits, potted cherries, plums, cinnamon and mocha, and it seems to be slightly more developed than the coolish and vibrantly fresh Luft. In fact, the Neuberg is more a relative to the former Bollenberg Harmonie than to the Luft.

Full-bodied and generous on the silky-textured and refined palate, this is a deep, rich and powerful yet elegant Pinot Noir with super ripe cherry and dark berry fruit. The Neuberg has a warm, generous and sunny character, but it also reveals fine tannins and complex acidity. The making of this wine is the same as for the Luft: 18 days of maceration are followed by 15 months of élevage in 65% new oak barrels of top origin."

More About The Winery

Founded in 1691, Domaine Valentin Zusslin is one of Alsace’s oldest family estates, now run by the 13th generation, Marie and Jean-Paul Zusslin. Located in Orschwihr, in the southern part of the region, the domaine cultivates 16 hectares of vineyards with a steadfast commitment to biodynamic viticulture since 1997.

The estate’s holdings include some of Alsace’s finest terroirs, notably the Bollenberg, Clos Liebenberg, and Pfingstberg Grand Cru. Here, classic Alsatian grapes — Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, and Pinot Noir — thrive on limestone and clay-limestone soils, producing wines of remarkable purity, energy, and terroir expression.

Zusslin’s wines are renowned for their precision, balance, and ageing potential, with whites showing crystalline minerality and aromatic finesse, and their Pinot Noirs earning growing acclaim for Burgundian-like elegance. Every bottle reflects the family’s philosophy of harmony between vineyard, nature, and craftsmanship.
