Wine Region: Burgundy - France
Grape: 100% Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes:One of the best Chablis Premier Cru vineyards thanks to its long, narrow trajectory that catches the morning sun and creates wonderfully pure wines.
Expert Ratings:
Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy) 91-93/100
"Pale lemon colour. Once again, the nose is discreet but fine. Actually, I can still taste the straight Chablis which immediately preceded this! Crisp, stony, then a light vegetal touch with some lemon juice as well. Detailed finish, long and fine. Still very youthful. 15 hl/ha Drink from 2025-2028. (Jun 2022)"
Neal Martin (Vinous) 91-93/100
"The 2021 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru was acutely affected by frost, 10-15hl/ha this year. It has a lovely nose with Granny Smith apples, Nashi pear and light flinty aromas that unfold in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, very malic and tensile with impressive weight and energy towards the finish. Small in quantity, big in quality. Drink: 2024-2037. (Sep 2022)"
About the winery: The Billaud family have been producing great Chablis since 1815. 6th generation Samuel set out on his own in 2010 and it is fair to say that after a decade, his dynamic approach and great winemaking touch have taken his domaine from a status of Rising Star to one of the very best, established growers in the region.
Samuel makes precise, elegant and terroir-true expressions of every vineyard in his care. His wines are electric and simply crackle with the tension and vibrancy which can be found in the region's best wines. Offering scintillating wines from the refreshing, steely fresh Petit-Chablis through to bold and dynamic Grand Crus, Samuel Billaud is a master of his craft, and as Neal Martin points out, "We should see him right at the top of Chablis producers alongside the likes of Raveneau and Vincent Dauvissat". These are singular Chablis and the sheer embodiment of purity and poise.
