One of the best Chablis Premier Cru vineyards thanks to its long, narrow trajectory that catches the morning sun and creates wonderfully pure wines.
Expert Ratings
Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy) 91-93/100
"Pale lemon colour. Once again, the nose is discreet but fine. Actually, I can still taste the straight Chablis which immediately preceded this! Crisp, stony, then a light vegetal touch with some lemon juice as well. Detailed finish, long and fine. Still very youthful. 15 hl/ha Drink from 2025-2028. (Jun 2022)"
Neal Martin (Vinous) 91-93/100
"The 2021 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru was acutely affected by frost, 10-15hl/ha this year. It has a lovely nose with Granny Smith apples, Nashi pear and light flinty aromas that unfold in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, very malic and tensile with impressive weight and energy towards the finish. Small in quantity, big in quality. Drink: 2024-2037. (Sep 2022)"
More About The Winery
The Billaud family has been producing outstanding Chablis since 1815, and today Samuel Billaud, the 6th generation, is recognized as one of the region’s most talented winemakers. After establishing his own domaine in 2010, Samuel quickly rose from a “rising star” to being regarded among the very best in Chablis, alongside Raveneau and Dauvissat.
Samuel Billaud crafts terroir-driven wines of extraordinary precision and vibrancy. From the crisp, steely freshness of Petit Chablis to the depth and complexity of his Premier and Grand Crus, his wines crackle with minerality, tension, and elegance, perfectly capturing the essence of Chablis’ Kimmeridgian limestone soils.
International critics, including Neal Martin, consistently praise Billaud’s wines for their singular clarity and poise. They are the embodiment of purity, finesse, and ageing potential, making them highly sought after by collectors and sommeliers worldwide.
