Wine Region: Burgundy - France
Grape : 100% Pinot Noir.
Tasting notes:
Expressive bouquet of wild strawberry, cherry, violet, and gentle spice. The palate is finely structured and precise, with silky tannins and bright acidity framing pure red fruit, floral notes, and a touch of earth. Elegant and persistent, it finishes with finesse and remarkable balance — a classic and age-worthy Volnay.
Expert Ratings:
Jasper Morris:90–92 points
“One third whole bunch. Medium deep purple, quite a complex nose with raspberry and strawberry more than the cherry which we have seen in many other wines, some orange blossom too, then a thicker sweeter fruit behind. Tightly knit.”

“The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans offers up aromas of red berries, plums, warm spices, and wilted rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, lively, and unusually charming for a young wine from this site, its pretty core of fruit is framed by supple, melting tannins and bright animating acids.”
Vinous (Neal Martin): 91–93 points
“The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a cru whereby Brian Sieve aims to create a more silky Champans that expresses all the soil types. This includes 50% whole cluster and 30% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet of red berry fruit, sous-bois, and delicate mineral aromas. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit, quite saline in the mouth, with a fine crescendo toward the finish. Very good length here. A very lovely and elegant Les Champans.”
Burghound: 91–94 points
“Slightly riper aromas exhibit notes of plum, black raspberry, spice, and violet. There is excellent density to the more voluminous, if slightly less refined, medium-weight flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the slightly firmer tannic spine.”
About the Winery:
After being founded in the 1750s, in the mid-18th century, the Domaine de Montille century extended over 12 hectares. The family's financial problems meant that Etienne de Montille, the manager at that time, had to abandon certain parcels of land and focus on 3 hectares, mainly in Volnay. With the arrival of Hubert de Montille, Etienne's grandson, the domaine took off in another direction. Like his father, Hubert was a lawyer, however he would go on to lead a double life as a wine grower and a lawyer. He decided to produce his own wines from A to Z. Within a few decades, he would become one of the finest examples in the region, perfectly expressing the terroir of each climat with pure and elegant wines.
Today, the domaine is managed by Etienne and Alix de Montille, Hubert's children who also were originally steered towards a legal career. The domaine now has 20 hectares of vines, including 15 of grand and premier crus, on the best climats of Burgundy, in white and red! Domaine de Montille now produces its wines using biodynamic methodology, perpetuating the tradition of innovation and excellence introduced by Hubert de Montille. Etienne and Alix also created a mini trading structure, Maison Deux Montille Soeur Frère.
