Tasting notes: "With vines of an average age of 50 years, the Premier Cru Les Pruliers is an intense and robust wine which has a beautiful capacity to ageing." - Henri Gouges

Expert Rating

"Being bottled today. A slightly darker colour here. There’s a good weight of a darker red berry fruit with a slight mentholated touch. The structure is more like a classical central Nuits-St-Georges, with both firmer tannins and a sound thread of acidity. The fruit continues very nicely behind. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: November 2022"

- 93/100 Vinous
"The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru comes across a little muted on the nose compared to its peers, maybe just a little subdued, though it will open with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, citrus-fresh with a little more weight towards the finish. This conveys perhaps the most energy from Gouge's white 2021 with fine persistency on the aftertaste. Classy."

- 91-93/100 Burghound
"Outstanding. A cool, pure and distinctly earthy nose combines plum and dark berry aromas with plenty of sauvage and a hint of game. I very much like the texture of the highly energetic, sappy and rich medium weight flavors that immediately firms up on the rustic, robust and markedly powerful finish. This is very Pruliers in style and a wine that’s going to need extended patience"

About the winery: Henri Gouges inherited 9 hectares of prime Nuits-St-Georges vineyards just after the First World War, and expanded his holdings significantly between 1920-1934. Today it includes 14.5 hectares – including seven of the best well- positioned 1er crus. Henri started bottling his own wines in 1933 and marketing them directly to its clients. He strongly believed in low yield, and was obsessed controlling the yields. This philosophy was passed to the current generation running the domaine. These days, the domaine is run by Henri’s grand children Pierre and Christian, and Pierre’s son Gregory who is mainly in charge of the wine making.

The 30 acres of Premier Cru vineyards has remained unchanged since the 1930s. There are seven Premiers Crus: Les Saint-Georges, Les Chaignots, Chênes Carteaux, Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges, Les Pruliers, and Les Vaucrains, plus the white La Perrière from a mutated Pinot Noir that Henri Gouges noticed growing in 1936 within Clos-des-Porrets and subsequently propagated. By 2008, the entirety of the vineyards had been converted to organic viticulture.
