Chateau du Moulin-à-Vent, the finest terroirs lie in a central east-west strip, where the Château sits, overlooking the appellation's border and Fleurie. With 130 vineyard parcels, the estate is gradually trellising its vines to ease soil work, though head training remains mandatory.
"They constitute collectively the largest single share of top acreage in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, and... render wines that will be flatteringly compared with the great Pinots of the Côte d'Or."
Grégoire Hoppenot founded his domaine at Les Roches in Fleurie after years in the wine industry, launching his first wines in 2018 to great success. His nine hectares span diverse terroirs, with five distinct 'climates' across two slopes. The grapes for this wine come from Les Garants and Les Roches—Les Garants features poor granite soils with visible quartz, while Les Roches has deeper granite and sand-rich soils. Harvesting is manual to ensure top-quality fruit selection.
"As Hoppenot puts it, he wants to 'make clean wine from organic grapes without any adulteration,' and he emphasizes the importance of texture among his aesthetic priorities. The results are perfumed, supple, and charming."
The legendary Graillot family, renowned for crafting some of the Northern Rhône’s finest, age-worthy Syrahs, has expanded north in pursuit of new challenges. Maxime and Antoine Graillot, winemakers behind Domaine des Lises and Domaine Alain Graillot, turned their passion for Gamay to Beaujolais, acquiring prime organic vineyards in Fleurie and Saint-Amour in 2013.
Since 1743, the Geoffray family has passed down a deep passion for winemaking, respect for terroir, and a commitment to excellence. In 1877, Zaccharie and Marguerite Geoffray acquired Château Thivin and its surrounding vineyards, steadily expanding the estate across generations.
Now led by the 5th and 6th generations, the family continues to craft wines with the same dedication. Claude Vincent proudly shares this legacy with his grandchildren, introducing them to the craft and the land.
"Yet, for all this history, the wines have a dual stance of modernity and tradition and I would say they tap into the best of both worlds. The vines are old and the cellars have been carefully renovated to retain the enduring benefits of traditional vinification and embrace aspects of more modern practice."
Jean-Marc Burgaud is a rising star in Beaujolais, crafting expressive Gamay from his 19 hectares in Morgon, Régnié, and Beaujolais Villages. His meticulous approach and exceptional vineyards justify his ambitions.
Vinification follows traditional Beaujolais methods, with whole-berry carbonic maceration and élevage in tank and barrel. His prized Morgon Côte du Py, sourced from 50-year-old vines on schist and iron-rich soils, delivers structured, mineral-driven wines with vibrant black fruit notes.
Domaine du Clos du Fief, a rare 4th-generation Cru estate in Juliénas and Jullié, is run by father-son duo Michel and Sylvain Tête. Rooted in history, these high-altitude vineyards trace back over 2,000 years to the Gallo-Roman era.
Michel, trained in Beaune, applies traditional methods—low yields, meticulous farming, and classic winemaking—to craft serious, terroir-driven reds. Their wines showcase the purity and depth of Beaujolais at its finest.
