Wine Region: Loire - France
Grape: Cabernet Franc (100%)
A concentrated garnet-red in the glass. Notes of raspberry, mint and anise on the nose. On the palate, powerful and intense with superbly balanced acidity and well-structured tannins. Full-bodied, complex yet elegant. The finish is lingering suggesting further red fruit notes.
Wine Spectator 92 / 100
"The 2018 Saumur Champigny La Marginale is from a very warm and early-ripening, south-facing Cabernet Franc vineyard that yields about 35 hectoliters per hectare. The nose of the 2018 is deep, concentrated and aromatic and combines ripe black fruit aromas with spicy and toasty as well as floral tones. Aged in large oak and then 12 months in barriques, this is a juicy, intense and elegant red with remarkably fine and elegant tannins and a palatable mineral energy. This is an extraordinarily good and coolish-styled 2018 Cabernet Franc from Saumur Champigny, but the wine also seems to include the Bordelais blood and spirit of Bordeaux-native Thierry Germain. Tasted in June 2021." - Stephan Reinhardt
About the Winery:
The 50-hectare Domaine des Roches Neuves is run by Bordelais Thierry Germain and is situated in the appellation of Saumur-Champigny in the Loire Valley. The winery has existed since 1850, and since purchasing the estate in 1991, Thierry has turned it into one of the finest in France.
A passionate and meticulous winemaker, he is dedicated to site specific wines produced from Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. He has also brought in biodynamic and organic growing practices in the fine limestone-laced vineyard, contributing to the ultra purity of his wines.
The goal of Thierry Germain is to produce Cabernet Franc with purity, finesse, drinkability and the silky elegance of pinot noir. When it comes to his Chenin Blancs, these are minerally and fresh when young and slowly take on weight with time.
