Tasting notes

The 2023 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu 'Coteau de Vernon' is a benchmark, 100% Viognier white wine from the Northern Rhône, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, lemon peel, and dried florals. The midweight palate offers rich substance, silky texture, and immaculate freshness on a long, nuanced finish.

100% Viognier from old vines (50-80 years) planted on steep granite terraces. The aromas show early-ripe peach, apricot, zesty lemon peel, pastry, jasmine, and subtle exotic fruit hints. The palate is fleshy and midweight-to-full with real depth, balanced by a sharp mineral core and pristine acidity, closing on a long, refined, structured finish with a delicate, signature bitterness.

More About The Winery

Georges Vernay is known as the "King of Condrieu" and was responsible for the growth and worldwide recognition of this small appellation during the 1950s. His estate covers 16 hectares of vineyards, 3 of which are in the Côte Rôtie appellation. The steep and uneven vineyards make mechanical labour impossible.

Georges Vernay's pioneering work single-handedly rescued Condrieu from near-extinction — at the time, barely eight hectares remained under vine in the entire appellation. Georges' daughter, Christine, returned to her roots with Paul Anselem, her Parisian husband, and has looked after the winemaking since 1997, gaining worldwide recognition for her Côte Rôtie wines.

Under Christine's stewardship, the domaine is regarded as the definitive reference for Viognier, while its Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph bottlings have earned equal acclaim for their purity and refusal to over-oak, letting each terroir speak for itself.
