Tasting notes

The vineyard of 1er cru “Carelle sous la Chapelle” is located just below the village of Volnay and its vines are 30 years of age on average.

The nose is delicate with profound notes of red fruits, rose petals and black fruits. The palate is refined and delicate with some candied fruits going through to the finish with ample energy and freshness.

Expert Ratings

92-94 points - Neal Martin, Vinous

Red berry fruit, violets and iris flower on the nose - this blossoms in the glass, a hint of vanilla in the background. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grain tannins and gentle grip. This is very elegant and pure, cohesive and silky on the finish. This is a gorgeous Volnay that will age with style.

More About The Winery

The Clerget family has deep roots in Volnay, with a lineage tracing back to the 13th century. After a period of dormancy, the estate was revived in 2015 when Thibaud Clerget, the 28th generation, took over from his father, Yvon. With energy, vision, and international experience in New Zealand, Oregon, and Burgundy, Thibaud has quickly re-established Domaine Yvon Clerget as one of the most exciting names in the Côte de Beaune.

Today, the domaine cultivates 6 hectares across prestigious vineyards in Volnay, Pommard, Meursault, and Clos de Vougeot. Its crown jewel is the Volnay 1er Cru “Clos du Verseuil”, a 0.68-hectare monopole nestled beside Les Taillepieds, acquired by the family in 1936. Other highlights include Volnay Caillerets, Pommard Rugiens, and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Since his arrival, Thibaud has converted the vineyards to biodynamic farming, reduced the use of new oak, and introduced whole-cluster fermentations, crafting wines of purity, finesse, and terroir expression. His style emphasizes delicacy, elegance, and approachability, while retaining the complexity and structure for ageing.
