“1500 bottles every year!”
«Kammerlas, which means “small rooms” in Alsatian dialect is the oldest plot of the winery : vines have been planted in 1938/1939, right in the middle of the Grand Cru Pfingstberg.
Back in the days varieties were planted all together in the same plot. Here the Kammerlas are a mix of mainly Riesling (5,16 ares), Gewurztraminer (2,06 ares), Muscat Ottonel (2,06 ares) and Sylvaner (2,06 ares).
Vines are also planted “en échalas” which means they grow around a stake without trellis system. The plot can only be hand-worked since we can’t reach it with a tractor or with our horse.
Grapes were all picked together on the 27/09/2017, pressed and vinified together for an overall production of around 700 bottles. Being given the small volume produced we had to adapt ourselves and vinify this wine in stainless steel instead of foudre, for almost a year. Also, because of the blend this wine cannot be considered as a Grand Cru even though how precious, rare, and complex it is.
Structured wine, its complexity linked to the terroir of the Pfingstberg offers a rich and expressive mouthfeel and a salty and precise acidity showcasing the sandstone terroir.»
Tasting notes: This cuvée presents a strong personality with a light golden robe. Juicy notes of ripe yellow and stone fruits which dominate the palate. Complex, elegant and french with a long, smooth finish.
About the winery: Marie Zusslin and her brother, Jean-Paul, began working alongside their father, Jean-Marie, and grandfather, Valentin, in 2000. For ten years the three generations worked together in the same house/winery established by their ancestors in 1671.
Today, Marie and Jean-Paul share the lead responsibilities in the cellar and the vineyard following the holistic approach established by their father, whom began practicing biodynamic farming in 1997.
The Zusslins farm a number of terroirs close to their home village of Orschwihr: Clos Liebenberg, Bollenberg, and Pfingstberg. Their concern for nature creates beautiful wines full of vitality.
