Tasting notes

The 2023 Egly-Ouriet Coteaux Champenois Ambonnay Rouge "Cuvée des Grands Côtés" is a rare, 100% Pinot Noir still red wine from old Grand Cru vines, opening with expressive aromas of wild raspberry, red cherry, minerals, and light spice. The palate is silky yet structured, offering vibrant red berry fruit and a long, saline, chalky finish.

Bright, transparent ruby-red. The aromas show wild strawberries, raspberries, red cherries, wildflowers, and subtle stony minerality, with hints of delicate spice and forest floor.

Silky, fine-grained tannins give a fine balance of weight and elegance, with juicy red berries alongside faint, well-integrated barrel vanilla and flinty elements. The finish is long, fresh, and tense, with a lingering chalky and saline cut.

More About The Winery

Francis Egly's champagnes impress with the exceptional quality of their base wines. They are powerful, terroir-expressive sparkling wines that are mainly based on Pinot Noir. Although the Domaine is today one of the most renowned grower-producers in Champagne, it has not been bottling its own wines for that long. Before Francis Egly took over the helm in 1982, most of the grapes were sold to negociants.

Of the 12 hectares on the estate, eight are in Ambonnay and the rest in Bouzy, Verzenay and Vrigny. Francis Egly spends most of his time in the vineyard and is an advocate of very ripe grape material and the associated late harvest.

In addition to its sparkling wines, which are sought after worldwide and consistently praised by critics, Egly-Ouriet also produces what are widely regarded as the most elegant and complete still wines (Coteaux Champenois) in Champagne. These are profound, Burgundian-style Pinot Noirs that age superbly, but are difficult to obtain due to tiny quantities.
