Tasting notes

Polished and generous, the Alter Ego de Palmer 2019 announces itself with a cascade of ripe blackberry, cassis, and violet. The unmistakable signature of Margaux at its most expressive. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, it carries the elegance of its grand vin stablemate without the weight, delivering a medium-bodied palate of silky tannins, bright freshness, and a finish of effortless length. The second wine of Château Palmer in name only, in practice, a Margaux of considerable ambition and pedigree.

More About TheWinery

Introduced in 1998, Alter Ego de Palmer is far more than a traditional second wine. It is conceived as a distinct expression of the Palmer terroir, offering a more immediate and accessible interpretation while preserving the estate’s signature elegance.

Produced at Château Palmer, one of the most revered properties in Margaux, Alter Ego benefits from the same meticulous vineyard work and biodynamic philosophy. The estate’s exceptional terroir—deep gravel soils with excellent drainage—allows for optimal ripening and remarkable aromatic finesse.

The blend typically favours a higher proportion of Merlot, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, resulting in a wine that is supple, generous, and beautifully textured from a young age. Compared to the Grand Vin, Alter Ego is crafted to highlight fruit purity and approachability, without sacrificing depth.

In the glass, it reveals notes of ripe blackberry, plum, violet, and subtle spice, framed by silky tannins and a refined structure. There is a hallmark Margaux elegance—floral lift, precision, and length—combined with a more immediate charm.

Alter Ego de Palmer represents a different reading of the same great terroir: less about power and ageing, more about pleasure and expression in its youth, while still retaining the pedigree and precision that define Château Palmer.
