Tasting notes
Deep, brilliant carmine red. The nose is fresh and floral, with bay leaf and peony alongside dark fruit and stone fruit, plus a light smoky touch. The palate is rich yet refined, with ripe red fruit, a full and smooth texture and firm, velvety tannins. Powerful but harmonious, it will drink well over the next several years. Serve at 14 to 16°C with confit lamb shoulder, honey-glazed duck or roast spiced pork.
About the Winery
Domaine du Clos des Fées was founded by Hervé Bizeul, a former award-winning sommelier and wine journalist who left Paris to make wine in Roussillon. In around thirty years he has turned the estate into one of the region's great success stories, working the limestone amphitheatre of Vingrau at the foot of the Pyrenees.
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée is made from some of the estate's oldest vines, between 50 and 100 years old, grown on clay-limestone slopes. The grapes are hand-harvested, macerated for 20 to 25 days and aged for 12 months in concrete vats, giving a wine that combines southern power with freshness and finesse.
