Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (around 73%), with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a range of rare grape varieties
Tasting notes
Opaque red-purple, with an alluring nose of musky rosebuds over sweet, crisp black fruit. The palate shows tremendous freshness, ripe blackcurrant and spicy notes, with excellent concentration and a very long, elegant finish. Described by the estate as an iron hand in a velvet glove, 2016 is one of the finest vintages Daumas Gassac has produced, with the structure to keep developing for years. Decant before serving and pair with lamb, beef or game.
About the Winery
Mas de Daumas Gassac holds an important place in the history of French wine. Founded in 1972 by Aimé and Véronique Guibert in the Gassac valley near Aniane, it showed the world that Languedoc could produce truly great, age-worthy wines, and it is often called the “Grand Cru of the Languedoc”.
The estate's unique terroir was identified by geographer Professor Henri Enjalbert, and its small vineyard plots are scattered among the wild garrigue in a cool microclimate. The red is built on old, non-cloned vines averaging over 40 years, with very low yields and no more than 10 to 15% new oak. Aimé Guibert passed away in 2016, and the estate is now run by his sons Samuel, Roman, Gaël and Basile.
