Tasting notes

The 2013 Château de Pibarnon Bandol Red is a structured, medium-weight wine made from a blend of roughly 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. In a half-bottle (375ml), it evolves slightly faster than a standard bottle, showing rich aromas of black raspberry, cassis, garrigue, licorice, and bay leaf, complemented by fine, silky tannins and a savory mineral finish.

The nose shows wild herbs, thyme, juniper, black olive, and leather, layered over dark red and black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with deep notes of plum, black raspberry, and a hint of dark chocolate, held together by ripe, smooth tannins and a fresh, mineral-driven backbone typical of Pibarnon's high-altitude Triassic limestone and blue marl soils.

More About The Winery

Founded in 1977 by the Comte Henri de Saint-Victor, Château de Pibarnon was one of the estates that helped restore Bandol's reputation as one of Provence's most serious terroirs. The vineyard is planted at unusually high altitude for the appellation, on limestone screes that force the old Mourvèdre vines to struggle for every drop of water — a key factor in the wines' concentration and longevity.

The estate remains family-run today, continuing a philosophy centred on low yields and patient, traditional winemaking, hand-harvesting each of its terraced parcels and ageing the wines slowly to allow Mourvèdre's structure to soften into something more refined and complex.
