Tasting notes

The 2024 Domaine Georges Vernay 'Fleurs de Mai' Syrah is a fresh, elegant Northern Rhône red from the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes appellation, showing a deep red color with fragrant aromas of red and forest fruits, delicate violets, and sweet pepper spices, leading to a supple, balanced, refreshingly crisp finish.

From IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, France, 100% Syrah from vines averaging 40+ years old, farmed organically and vinified fully destemmed, aged in a combination of barrels and concrete eggs.

Deep, vibrant ruby-red in the glass. The nose is perfumed and dainty, bursting with fresh red and black berries (blackberries, raspberries), hints of violet floral notes, and lifted sweet spices. The palate is supple and medium-bodied, with a pleasantly plump mid-palate, fine gentle tannins, vibrant freshness, and a clean, delicately peppery finish.

More About The Winery

Georges Vernay is known as the "King of Condrieu" and was responsible for the growth and worldwide recognition of this small appellation during the 1950s. His estate covers 16 hectares of vineyards, 3 of which are in the Côte Rôtie appellation. The steep and uneven vineyards make mechanical labour impossible.

Georges Vernay's pioneering work single-handedly rescued Condrieu from near-extinction — at the time, barely eight hectares remained under vine in the entire appellation. Georges' daughter, Christine, returned to her roots with Paul Anselem, her Parisian husband, and has looked after the winemaking since 1997, gaining worldwide recognition for her Côte Rôtie wines.

Under Christine's stewardship, the domaine is regarded as the definitive reference for Viognier, while its Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph bottlings have earned equal acclaim for their purity and refusal to over-oak, letting each terroir speak for itself.
