The Wine: Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé 2023
Bandol is one of the great wine appellations of Provence, and Château de Pibarnon is one of its most celebrated estates. Perched at 300 metres above sea level on a natural amphitheatre of ancient Triassic limestone, the estate produces wines of extraordinary purity and character — wines that taste, unmistakably, of their place.
The de Saint Victor family has farmed Pibarnon organically for decades, long before organic viticulture became fashionable. Their approach is simple: respect the land, work without shortcuts, and let the terroir speak. The result is a rosé that stands apart from the pale, easy-drinking Provence rosés that flood the market each summer.
The 2023 vintage is a beautiful expression of the estate. Mourvèdre — the grape that defines Bandol — gives the wine its backbone and depth, while Grenache and Cinsault contribute freshness and floral lift. In the glass, it is a luminous salmon-pink. On the nose, expect notes of wild strawberry, peach blossom, garrigue, and a whisper of the sea. The palate is generous but precise — there is real texture and length here, more than you would expect from a rosé at first glance. This is a wine that rewards attention.
It is also, from a cellaring standpoint, one of the rare rosés in the world built to age — though there is absolutely nothing wrong with drinking it right now, well-chilled, in good company.
