The 2025 Bordeaux vintage is generating significant excitement among négociants and critics. Here is our early assessment based on producer visits and barrel tastings, ahead of La Semaine des Primeurs in April 2026.
The Growing Season
The 2025 growing season in Bordeaux was characterised by a warm, dry summer following a cool and wet spring. The key to the vintage's quality was a return to more classic conditions in August and September — cooler nights that preserved acidity and freshness, combined with sufficient warmth to achieve full phenolic ripeness.
Left Bank vs Right Bank
On the Left Bank (Médoc, Graves), the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated communes of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe appear to have performed particularly well. The natural drainage of the Médoc's gravelly soils was an advantage in managing the spring rainfall, and producers report excellent concentration with notable freshness.
On the Right Bank (Saint-Émilion, Pomerol), the Merlot-dominant estates saw more variation. Châteaux with later-ripening plots and good drainage — Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, Figeac — report exceptional results. Estates on heavier clay soils experienced more challenges.
White Wines and Sauternes
Pessac-Léognan whites (Domaine de Chevalier, Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc) are reported to be outstanding — a combination of bright acidity from the cool spring and rich texture from the warm summer. For Sauternes, the conditions for botrytis development were good in October, and estates like Château d'Yquem and Rieussec report promising results.
Our Recommendation
Based on early reports, 2025 appears to be a vintage worth buying En Primeur — particularly for the great Left Bank châteaux and the top Right Bank estates. Prices will be set in April/May 2026 following La Semaine des Primeurs.
