Wine comes in a surprising range of bottle sizes, each with its own name, capacity, and impact on how the wine ages. This guide explains everything you need to know.
Standard Formats
Half bottle (37.5cl): Perfect for a single glass with dinner, or for trying a wine before committing to a full bottle. Wines in half bottles age faster due to the higher ratio of oxygen to wine.
Standard bottle (75cl): The universal benchmark. One bottle serves approximately 5-6 glasses. All wine ratings and tasting notes refer to this format.
Magnum (1.5L = 2 bottles): The most important format after the standard bottle. Magnums age more slowly and gracefully than standard bottles because the headspace (oxygen) to wine ratio is smaller. For cellaring fine wine, magnums are superior.
Double Magnum / Jeroboam (3L = 4 bottles): Impressive at the table and exceptional for large celebrations. Bordeaux uses "Double Magnum" (3L); Champagne uses "Jeroboam" for the same size.
Large Formats
Mathusalem (6L = 8 bottles): Named after the biblical patriarch. Spectacular for special events and ultra-rare for fine wine.
Why Does Bottle Size Affect Ageing?
The key is the cork. Every bottle has the same size cork, regardless of format. The larger the bottle, the smaller the ratio of oxygen ingress to wine volume. Less oxygen means slower, more graceful evolution. A magnum of Château Latour 2005 will reach its peak 5-10 years later than the same wine in a standard bottle — and will likely develop greater complexity.
This is why serious wine collectors seek out magnums of their favourite vintages at En Primeur — they are rarer, more impressive to serve, and superior for long-term cellaring.
