Wine Region: Burgundy - France

Grape: Pinot Noir (100%)

Tasting notes:

Very different to the more taciturn Rugiens, this is out-going and immediately alluring. There is a creaminess and softness to the tannins. They do not lack power but are so polished and serve to complement the delicate red and black cherry fruit. Floral notes of cherry blossom and hints of kirsch seduce you even more. Rich but enough freshness to prolong the finish and provide balance. Long and haunting. A top notch Corton. Fermented with two thirds whole bunches and aged in 50% new oak.

Expert Ratings:

Wine Advocate 92 / 100

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi from de Montille offers what you might call a noble bouquet befitting a grand cru with a complex, quite captivating mélange of dark berry fruit, sous bois and tea leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with some stem addition that defines the first half. But it works well: fresh and lively, sufficient fruit with a harmonious and quite persistent finish. Certainly this was one of the best wines that was shown at this blind tasting from the domaine. Tasted September 2017. Drink Date 2018 - 2032” - Neal Martin

Vinous 93 / 100

“Bright medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant and animal fur. The wild character carries through on the pliant palate, where red berry and mineral flavors are complicated by subtle earth tones and a whiff of fresh porcini. A potentially excellent Corton wine: vibrant, refined and very long, with harmonious tannins.” - Stephen Tanzer

About the Winery:

After being founded in the 1750s, in the mid-18th century, the Domaine de Montille century extended over 12 hectares. The family's financial problems meant that Etienne de Montille, the manager at that time, had to abandon certain parcels of land and focus on 3 hectares, mainly in Volnay. With the arrival of Hubert de Montille, Etienne's grandson, the domaine took off in another direction. Like his father, Hubert was a lawyer, however he would go on to lead a double life as a wine grower and a lawyer. He decided to produce his own wines from A to Z. Within a few decades, he would become one of the finest examples in the region, perfectly expressing the terroir of each climat with pure and elegant wines.

Today, the domaine is managed by Etienne and Alix de Montille, Hubert's children who also were originally steered towards a legal career. The domaine now has 20 hectares of vines, including 15 of grand and premier crus, on the best climats of Burgundy, in white and red! Domaine de Montille now produces its wines using biodynamic methodology, perpetuating the tradition of innovation and excellence introduced by Hubert de Montille. Etienne and Alix also created a mini trading structure, Maison Deux Montille Soeur Frère.
